Artisan Knows How to Shake Things Up

Artisan Complete has taken ownership of a new Transportation Simulator, also known as ‘The Shaker’. This machine is designed to simulate the motion that occurs during shipping by truck or other means to test a display’s structural integrity. Beginning in April 2006, displays that may present challenges in transit, because of their pre-packed product weight or due to an elaborate display design, will be monitored on this machine to ensure they will arrive at their destination without damage.

The simulator bed is 60” in length and 61” in width, and boasts a payload capacity of 1,250lbs. Testing is done using both Circular Synchronized and Vertical Linear motions, RPM and run time are adjusted according to each display’s requirement and will apply to both temporary and permanent displays.

“The Shaker is a machine that allows Artisan to test pre-packed displays before they leave our premises. With the pedestal mounted control box it allows Artisan employees to easily control, then produce a computed printout of the test results which will be available to our customers,” says Shipping Manager, Mike Patton.

“Testing is done first at the prototyping stage; this determines that proper structural support is incorporated into the design to hold the weight of the product, then tested again on a final production display to ensure the display will arrive safely at retail. Test methods and procedures are conducted as outlined by the ISTA,” says Temporary Display Manager of the display division, Merrill Howard.

Artisan is a Certified Laboratory of the International Safe Transit Association, allowing the company to perform simulator tests according to the rules and regulations of the ISTA.

Back to University

Chicago’s Northwestern University served as the venue for Artisan staff attending the POPAI University Masters Program. The two-day, eleven-session curriculum was delivered in a classroom setting by leading presenters in their field of expertise from academics to business. Attendees of the Program developed a greater understanding of marketing and merchandising at-retail from the perspective of branding, consumer behaviour, and point-of-purchase display strategy and design.
